Mohammad Eslami is a Max Weber Fellow in International Security at the European University Institute and a Visiting Fellow in International Security at Dublin City University, Ireland. He was previously an Assistant Professor of International Relations at the University of Minho, Portugal, and a fellow at the Arms Control Negotiation Academy, led by the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University.
His research spans the fields of international security and international relations. In international security, his work focuses on the proliferation of conventional and unconventional weapons in the Middle East, the impact of emerging military technologies, and the dynamics of AI-assisted arms races. In international relations, his research primarily examines great power competition in the Middle East, with a particular focus on China’s expanding role in the region. He has also conducted extensive studies on global and regional arms trade patterns, including imports and exports by Middle Eastern states.
Eslami is the author or editor of three scholarly books: Arms Race in the Middle East (Springer), Artificial Intelligence and International Security (Manchester University Press), and The Drones Race and International Security (Springer). His research has also appeared in leading international journals, including International Affairs, Review of International Studies, Third World Quarterly, Global Policy, and the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, among others. He writes regularly for Al-Jazeera, Middle East Eye, TRT Turkey, and other renowned news outlets in the Field of Middle East Affairs.
